Canoe Sailing: In ancient times Hawaiians utilized sailing canoes for trade and warfare among the tribes of the island chain. Nowadays, the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association (HSCA) replicates those ancient voyages and cultural values. The new sailing canoes hold 6 crew and can reach speeds of up 30 mph in open water ? the Hawaiian channels are known to be some of the roughest in the world, and the small and precarious sailing canoes deliver adrenaline loaded races along the stunning Hawaiian shoreline. This particular race starts on the Big Island and ends, 40 nautical miles later, in Hana, Maui. Gale force winds make the race an episode of ?survival at sea??
